Traffic Jam Dribbling Game

The Traffic Jam Dribbling Game is a soccer dribbling drill for U5–U9 players that turns cone clutter into a teaching tool. Weaving through a jammed-up center square forces young dribblers to lift their heads and keep the ball close - and because it plays like a race, they never notice they are doing technique work.

Setup
- Mark a grid about 30×30 yards.
- Scatter tall cones and training sticks randomly through the middle of the grid - this is the traffic jam.
- Split the group into four teams, one on each corner of the grid.
- Give each team one ball.
How It Works
- On the coach's signal, the first player from each line dribbles through the traffic jam, trying not to hit a cone, a stick, or another player.
- After clearing the jam, the player dribbles at speed to the line they are facing and passes to the first player there, who attacks the jam next.
- Repeat for about 10 minutes, then merge into bigger teams for the race version: dribble through the jam, around the cone on the opposite corner, and back through the jam.
- Players sit down when they finish their leg; the first team fully seated wins.
Coaching Points
- Heads up - four players enter the middle at the same time, so looking ahead is survival.
- Ball close through the congestion; small touches, quick feet.
- Add speed only after control is solid.
Variations
- For the youngest players, send only one or two dribblers into the jam at a time.
- Add or remove cones to tune the difficulty.
- Require a specific turn or move somewhere inside the jam.
