Sharks and Minnows
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Sharks and Minnows is one of the best soccer dribbling drills for U5–U8 players because it disguises hard work as a game. Every minnow has to keep the ball moving under real pressure, which forces them to shield with their body and keep their touches tight. Two rounds in, you will see kids turning away from defenders without being told.

Setup
- Mark out a grid roughly 20×25 yards with cones. Shrink or grow it to match your numbers and skill level.
- Give every player a ball except two - those two are the sharks.
- Minnows spread out inside the grid, each with a ball at their feet.
How It Works
- On your signal, minnows dribble anywhere inside the grid while the two sharks hunt for balls.
- A shark wins by kicking a minnow's ball out of the grid.
- When a minnow's ball goes out, that player jogs one lap around the grid, then rejoins the game.
- Each minnow gets two lives. Lose the ball a third time and you wait on the sideline.
- The last two minnows still dribbling become the sharks for the next round.
Coaching Points
- Calm feet under pressure - no panicked kicks when a shark closes in.
- Keep the ball within one step so a quick turn is always available.
- Put your body between the ball and the shark; shielding is the whole point.
- Encourage minnows to scan for open space instead of hiding in corners.
Variations
- Left foot only, then outside of the foot only, then sole-of-the-foot rolls.
- Add a second lap around the grid before a minnow can re-enter to raise the fitness load.
- Shrink the grid each round so the surviving minnows face more traffic.
