Guard the Castle
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Guard the Castle is a soccer passing drill for U6–U10 players disguised as a siege game. Three attackers move the ball around a lone defender, hunting the angle to knock the 'castle' - a ball balanced on a cone - flying with a well-weighted pass. Kids love it, and they get heads-up passing practice without realizing it.

Setup
- Mark a 12×12 yard grid for each group of four.
- One player in each group wears a bib - they are the castle guard (defender).
- Balance a ball on top of a disc cone in the middle of the grid; a tall cone works too. This is the castle.
- The three attackers spread around the grid with a game ball.
How It Works
- The three attackers pass the ball around the defender, looking for a clear line to the castle.
- The castle falls when a pass knocks the ball off the cone (or knocks the tall cone over).
- Each knockdown scores a point - reset the castle, rotate the defender, and play again.
Coaching Points
- Heads up: find the open lane to the castle before the pass.
- Proper weight on the pass - hard enough to topple the castle, accurate enough to hit it.
- Keep moving around the grid to find open space.
- It is fine to dribble a few yards to pull the defender out of the lane before releasing the pass.
Variations
- Shrink or remove the outer grid to change the challenge.
- Mark a 3×3 yard no-entry zone around the castle if players crowd the cone.
- Require a set number of passes before the attackers may shoot at the castle.
- Play a 1v1 version.
