Pirates of the Pugg
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Pirates of the Pugg is a soccer dribbling drill for U9–U12 players built around one Pugg goal in the middle of a circle. Dribblers get constant practice keeping the ball in traffic with their heads up, while the pirates work on winning tackles and finishing fast. Because the roles flip mid-game, everyone also trains the transition moment - the instant the ball changes hands.

Setup
- Mark a circle about the size of a center circle. Adjust it for the age and level of your group.
- Place a Pugg goal (or small pop-up goal) in the middle of the circle.
- Nine players start inside with a ball each; the other three are pirates with no ball.
How It Works
- Pirates press the dribblers and try to win a ball.
- When a pirate steals a ball, they immediately attack and try to score in the Pugg goal.
- If the pirate scores, the player who lost that ball becomes a pirate too.
- The pirate crew grows until one dribbler is left - they win the round.
- If the pirates can't get going early, the coach can jump in and help them win the first ball.
Coaching Points
- Dribblers: ball close, head up, always know where the nearest pirate and the nearest open space are.
- Lose the ball? Chase it immediately - the fight to win it back is part of the drill.
- Pirates: switch on the moment you win it. Hesitate and the ball gets poked away before you can shoot.
- Look for the finish early; the goal is small, so accuracy beats power.
Variations
- Start with two pirates for an easier round, four for a harder one.
- Require pirates to take two touches before shooting to add composure under pressure.
- Add a second Pugg goal back-to-back with the first so pirates can score from either side.
