Ouch!
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Ouch! is a fun soccer dribbling drill for U5–U8 that sneaks three skills into one silly game: dribbling, looking up, and striking a moving target. The target happens to be you, the coach. Every dramatic yell of "OUCH!" buys you another five minutes of total engagement from the group.
This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U7 drills.
Setup
- Cone off a grid around 20×30 yards. Make it smaller if players can't reach you, bigger if you're getting peppered.
- Every player starts inside the grid with a ball.
- The coach stands in the middle, ready to jog around.
How It Works
- The coach jogs around inside the grid while players dribble after them.
- Players score a point every time their strike hits the coach.
- Yell "OUCH!" loudly each time you're hit - the sillier, the better.
- Play timed rounds and have players count their own points.
Coaching Points
- Heads up while dribbling - players can't hit a moving coach if they're staring at the ball.
- Check the striking surface: inside of the foot for accuracy, laces for power.
- Reward players who dribble close before shooting instead of hopeful long-range hits.
- Keep moving so players have to adjust their angle before striking.
Variations
- If players are struggling, freeze for a few seconds now and then to give them a clear target.
- Call the surface: inside only, laces only, left foot only, right foot only.
- Add a parent or assistant as a second target to double the chances.
