Dribbling at the Cone

Dribbling at the Cone is a soccer dribbling drill that lets U6-U10 players learn fakes and feints without any pressure. The cone stands in for a defender: dribble at it, sell a move, cut away, and accelerate. It's the ideal first step before asking young players to beat a real opponent.
This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U8 drills.
Setup
- Mark a 20×10 yard grid with a single cone in the center.
- Each grid takes 3 players - build as many grids as your squad needs.
- Put 2 players on one end line and 1 player on the opposite end line; the first player in the pair starts with the ball.
How It Works
- The first player dribbles at the center cone under control.
- At the cone, they perform the chosen fake and cut the ball to change direction around it.
- After beating the cone, they accelerate to the far end line.
- They pass the ball to the waiting player, who attacks the cone from the other direction with the same move.
- Keep the rotation flowing until you introduce a new move at the cone.
Coaching Points
- Approach with the ball under close control - small touches into the move.
- Make the change of direction sharp and decisive at the cone.
- Sell the fake with the whole body: shoulders, hips, and eyes, not just the feet.
- Explode with a burst of speed the moment the move is done - that's what actually beats defenders.
Variations
- Rotate through moves: the scissors, the swerve, and a hard step with a shoulder drop and cut.
- Replace the cone with a passive defender, then a live defender, as players improve.
