3v1 Attacking the Goal
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
3v1 Attacking the Goal is a soccer attacking drill that builds composure in front of goal. Waves of three U9-U16 attackers face a single defender and a keeper, learning to move the ball quickly, read the situation, and pick the right moment to finish. The numbers advantage means lots of goals - and lots of confidence.

Setup
- Put a goalkeeper in goal and pick 2-3 defenders who will rotate in one at a time every 2-3 attacks.
- Form the remaining players into three lines - left, center, right - about 20-25 yards from goal.
- The ball starts with the center line.
How It Works
- The center player starts with the ball and one player from each line attacks together, playing 3v1 against the defender.
- The attackers string quick, accurate passes to pull the defender and keeper out of position, then finish.
- If an attack stalls or slows too much, call the ball dead and send the next trio.
- Rotate the defender every 2-3 attacks so the pressure stays honest.
Coaching Points
- Passes must be quick and played to feet.
- Find the back-side player - the pass away from the defender's lean is usually the killer.
- Stay patient: if the attack gets crowded, drop it back to the center player and switch the point of attack.
- Wide attackers should draw the defender and keeper toward them, then slide the ball across to the open teammate.
- Play fast - slow attacks are dead attacks.
Variations
- Limit attackers to one or two touches.
- Add a second defender to make it 3v2.
- Give the trio a 10-second shot clock to force urgency.
