Diagonal 1v1
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Diagonal 1v1 is a soccer drill that coaches both sides of the duel at once. A pass across the diagonal of a 15×15 grid instantly creates an attacker and a defender, so U9-U16 players learn to attack at speed and change pace on one side, and to close down and channel on the other.

Setup
- Mark a 15×15 yard grid.
- Split the team into 4 groups, one on each corner.
- Give the ball supply to two neighboring groups (Group A and Group B).
How It Works
- The first player in Group A passes diagonally across the grid to the first player in Group C.
- Player C attacks immediately, trying to dribble to the corner cone Player A came from.
- Player A follows their pass and defends, trying to stop C reaching the cone.
- The rep is dead when the ball leaves the grid or the defender wins possession.
- Group B then plays diagonally to Group D and the next duel begins. Keep alternating diagonals.
Coaching Points
- Attackers: run at the defender with speed, use a sharp change of pace to escape, get in behind, and take any half-chance.
- Defenders: remember 'Fast, Slow, Outside, Low'.
- Fast - sprint to close down while the ball is traveling. Slow - throttle down as you arrive and start moving with the attacker.
- Outside - show the attacker toward the weak side, away from where they want to go.
- Low - bend the knees and stay low so you can react and change direction instantly.
Variations
- Add a small gate at each corner cone that the attacker must dribble through to score.
- Play the diagonal ball in the air so the attacker must control before attacking.
- Run both diagonals at once with older groups to add traffic and scanning.
