Winger Taking On the Outside Fullback
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Wingers win games by beating their fullback, and this soccer attacking drill for U12–U16 players isolates exactly that duel. Dedicated wide lanes guarantee repeated 1v1s down each flank while a 4v4 battles in the middle, so your wide players get realistic repetitions of turning, driving at the back, and delivering.

Setup
- Use the attacking third with a full-size goal and goalkeeper.
- Split the group into 6 attackers and 6 defenders, plus a server at midfield with a supply of balls.
- Mark a lane 15 yards wide along each sideline.
- Put a winger in each lane - left winger left, right winger right - with one defending fullback per lane, creating a 1v1 on each flank.
- The remaining players play 4v4 in the central area between the lanes.
How It Works
- Only the winger and the outside fullback are allowed inside each lane.
- The server starts play by passing into one of the wingers.
- The fullback must allow the winger to turn before applying pressure.
- The winger goes 1v1, aiming to beat the fullback down the line.
- Once the fullback is beaten, the winger may pass or cross into the central players, who finish the attack.
Coaching Points
- Get wingers comfortable receiving and turning toward goal in one movement.
- Attack the space behind the fullback - a positive first touch down the line sets up the whole duel.
- Central players should time their runs off the winger's breakthrough.
Variations
- Only allow crosses after the defender has been beaten, turning the session into a crossing and finishing drill.
- Let the fullback press immediately for a harder challenge.
- Rotate wingers and fullbacks every few serves so several players get the 1v1 reps.
