This 2v1 and 1v1 game is a soccer possession drill for U9–U16 players that teaches two ideas at once: keeping the ball under pressure and switching the point of attack to penetrate. Players learn to lift their eyes to the far zone, time the switching pass, and sprint into support to rebuild the 2v1 advantage.

Setup

  • Mark a 10×20 yard grid with a halfway line across the middle.
  • In one half, place two attackers (yellow) and one defender (red).
  • In the other half, place one attacker (yellow) and one defender (red).

How It Works

  1. The two attackers play keep-away from the defender in their half.
  2. After a set number of passes, they look to play into their teammate in the far half, who works to get free of their marker.
  3. The far defender tries to intercept or block the switching pass.
  4. When the ball arrives, one attacker from the first half joins the far half to create a new 2v1.
  5. Complete the required passes there, switch the ball back, and continue. Rotate players so everyone works both zones.

Coaching Points

  • Glance into the other zone on every touch - know where the switch is before you need it.
  • Receive with an open body shape facing the field whenever possible.
  • Pass to the correct foot so the receiver can play open, not trapped.

Variations

  • Start with 3v1 in one half and 1v1 in the other.
  • Play 3v1 and 2v1 for a larger, easier version.
