The Soccer Gauntlet
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The Soccer Gauntlet is a classic dribbling drill that forces players to keep the ball close while scanning for danger. Everyone dribbles across a grid at the same time while defenders try to knock balls out, so vision and awareness matter as much as footwork. It is a favorite with U6-U12 groups because it plays like a game of survival.

Setup
- Mark a grid roughly 20×15 yards.
- Choose one player to be the defender and place them inside the grid without a ball.
- Line every other player up along one end line, each with a ball.
How It Works
- On the coach's signal, all attackers dribble at speed toward the far line while avoiding the defender.
- The defender tries to win a ball and kick it out of the grid.
- Any attacker whose ball is knocked out becomes an extra defender (without a ball) for the next crossing.
- Keep running crossings as the defending group grows.
- The last attacker still dribbling wins the game.
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball within playing distance on every touch.
- Stay balanced - control your body as well as the ball.
- Play with eyes up to spot defenders before they arrive.
- Steer into open space and away from pressure.
- When space opens, accelerate and dribble at speed.
Variations
- Restrict attackers to one foot, or to the outside of the foot only.
- Start with two defenders for older or stronger groups.
- Award a point for every safe crossing instead of playing elimination.
