The World Cup Soccer Drill is a tournament-style shooting game that kids of every age beg to play. Four small teams fight for the same ball inside the penalty box, and scoring is the only way to survive the round. Because every team is outnumbered by the rest, this soccer shooting drill constantly recreates numbers-down situations from real matches. It works from U8 all the way to U16.

Setup

  • Set up inside the penalty box in front of a full-size goal.
  • Create four teams of three players wearing different colored bibs.
  • Put a goalkeeper in the goal.
  • The coach stands nearby with the full supply of balls.

How It Works

  1. The coach serves a ball into the area and all four teams play at once, every team against everyone else.
  2. When a team scores, it steps out, is safe, and advances to the next round.
  3. Round 1 shakes out as 3v9, then 3v6, then 3v3 - the last team without a goal is eliminated.
  4. Round 2 runs 3v6 then 3v3, and again the last team to score is out.
  5. Round 3 is a straight 3v3 final: the first team to two goals lifts the World Cup.
  6. Whenever a ball goes dead, the coach serves a new one in immediately.

Coaching Points

  • Reward teamwork - three connected players beat nine scattered ones.
  • Push for quick, short passes to escape the crowd.
  • Encourage players to shoot early and take chances when a sight of goal appears.
  • Keep the energy playful - this drill should feel like a festival, so have fun with it.

Variations

  • Let each team pick a country name and announce eliminations like a real tournament.
  • Play with teams of two to increase touches for smaller groups.
  • Require a completed pass before a goal counts to force combination play.
