The Flag Game is a soccer dribbling drill for U6–U10 that forces young players to keep the ball close in genuinely tight space. With flags and teammates everywhere, heads have to come up or collisions happen - which is exactly the habit you want to build. The musical-chairs race at the end keeps everyone locked in.

Setup

  • Mark a narrow grid about 10×25 yards.
  • Scatter flags (or tall cones) randomly inside - start with two fewer flags than players.
  • Every player begins inside the grid with a ball.

How It Works

  1. Players dribble freely inside the grid, weaving around flags and each other.
  2. The congestion forces constant scanning - that's the point.
  3. When the coach yells "STOP!", everyone races to claim a free flag.
  4. Two players will miss out each round. First player to claim a flag five rounds in a row wins.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes up between touches - players should always know where the nearest free flag is.
  • Ball tight to the feet in traffic; a heavy touch means a collision or a lost round.
  • Use every surface: inside, outside, sole, and laces to change direction.
  • Praise players who find open pockets of space instead of following the crowd.

Variations

  • Remove flags each round to raise the stakes.
  • Swap points for a light forfeit (star jumps, push-ups) for the players left without a flag - keep it age-appropriate.
  • Restrict dribbling to one foot or one surface to sharpen close control.
