This 1v1 soccer shooting drill for U7–U12 turns 50/50 balls into a team competition. Two players sprint around cones, fight for one serve, and attack the goal against a keeper. It hits sprint speed, physical duels, finishing, and goalkeeping in one loud, competitive package.

This drill pairs well with others in the shooting category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U10 drills.

Setup

  • Use a full training goal (7-a-side goal for younger groups) with a goalkeeper.
  • Split the rest of the squad into two even teams, one lined up at each goal post.
  • The first player in each line starts with a hand on their post.
  • Place a cone about 20 yards from goal in front of each line, and keep a pile of balls with the coach.

How It Works

  1. On the coach's signal, the first player from each team sprints around the cone in front of their line.
  2. As they round the cones, the coach serves a 50/50 ball between them.
  3. Both players battle for possession; whoever wins it attacks the goal, and either player can score.
  4. A goal earns that team one point. First team to 10 points wins.
  5. After each duel, players rejoin their line and the next pair steps up.

Coaching Points

  • Full sprint around the cone - the race decides who reaches the ball first.
  • Be brave in the 50/50: strong body position wins the duel.
  • Attack the goal immediately after winning possession; don't slow down to admire the ball.
  • If you lose the ball, keep fighting - defending hard can still save the point.
  • Keep it loud and fun; the competition is the engine of the drill.

Variations

  • Shrink the goal or remove the keeper's advantages if scoring is too easy.
  • Move the cones farther away or off at an angle to change the race.
  • Serve bouncing or lofted balls so players practice controlling out of the air.
