This attacking soccer drill for U11–U16 teams answers a question every young player faces: when should I dribble? Working 6v6 against tight man-marking in the attacking third, players learn to shoot when the chance is there, pass when a teammate is better placed, and take their defender on when neither option exists.

Setup

  • Use the attacking third of the field with a full-size goal and a goalkeeper.
  • Split the group into 6 attackers and 6 defenders.
  • Place a server at midfield with a supply of balls.
  • Tell the defenders to mark man-to-man and stay tight.

How It Works

  1. Attackers work off the ball to shake their marker and show for a pass from the server.
  2. On receiving, the attacker turns to face their defender straight away.
  3. From there the attacker makes one of three decisions: shoot if a chance is on, pass to a teammate in a better spot, or dribble to beat the defender.
  4. Play out each attack, then restart with a new ball from the server.

Coaching Points

  • Tight marking makes going forward risky - but scoring requires that risk. Praise brave decisions.
  • Demand constant movement so attackers create space for each other.
  • Reinforce the decision order: dribble in the final third when no shot or pass is available.
  • When a player beats their defender, they should attack the space in behind immediately.

Variations

  • Lift the man-marking restriction and let defenders organize freely.
  • Limit attackers to three touches to speed up the decision-making.
  • Add a second server on the opposite flank to vary the service angle.
