Soccer Tag hides hundreds of dribbling touches inside a playground game. Every U5–U8 player dribbles their own ball while trying to tag others - and dodge tags themselves. Confidence on the ball grows fast when kids forget they're practicing.

This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U7 drills.

Setup

  • Mark a grid about 20×20 yards; go bigger for larger groups.
  • Give every player a ball and send them all inside the grid.

How It Works

  1. All players dribble at once, trying to tag (touch) other players with a hand while keeping their own ball.
  2. When tagged, a player must hold the spot where they were tagged with one hand - and keep dribbling.
  3. Tagged a second time? Hold both spots while dribbling (it gets funny fast).
  4. On a third tag, the player steps outside the grid, completes a quick task - 25 toe touches, 4 juggles, 25 foundation touches, or a few push-ups - and rejoins.
  5. Restart fresh every few minutes.

Coaching Points

  • Ball stays close - a runaway ball means an easy tag.
  • Heads up so players can see both targets and taggers.
  • Encourage using all parts of the foot: inside, outside, sole, heel, and laces.
  • Keep everyone dribbling at all times; no parking the ball to chase tags.

Variations

  • Shrink the grid to force tighter control and more encounters.
  • Nominate two 'It' players without balls for a round, then rotate.
  • Award points for tags and count them out loud to add excitement.
