Pressure and Cover Defending Game
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Good team defending starts with two players knowing exactly who they are: the one pressing the ball and the one covering behind. This soccer defending drill for U10–U16 makes those roles loud and unmistakable - players must literally call them out during a live game, or concede a free kick.

Setup
- Mark a large grid approximately 60×40 yards.
- Place a goal on each end line with a goalkeeper in each.
- Split the group into two even teams.
How It Works
- Play a normal game between the two teams.
- Whenever a team is defending, the player closest to the ball must shout "ONE!" - claiming the first defender role and pressing the ball.
- The teammate covering the space behind the presser must shout "TWO!" - claiming the second defender role.
- If a defending team fails to call the roles, the attacking team is awarded a free kick.
- Every change of possession triggers new calls - roles reset constantly.
Coaching Points
- Help players recognize the trigger: the moment possession is lost, someone is first defender.
- First defender presses to slow the attack, not to dive in.
- Second defender takes an angled position behind and to the side, covering the space the presser can't.
- As the ball moves, roles change - praise fast, loud communication when players swap ONE and TWO.
Variations
- Freeze play occasionally and ask both teams who ONE and TWO should be.
- Add a "THREE!" call for the balancing defender to teach the full pressure-cover-balance chain.
- Award a bonus point for goals scored within 10 seconds of a correctly called press.
