Shadow Dribbling

Shadow Dribbling pairs players up so one leads and one copies, both with a ball at their feet. The follower never tackles, but their presence adds gentle pressure while the leader invents moves worth imitating. It is a creative soccer dribbling warm-up for U6-U12 players that rewards imagination as much as technique.

Setup

  • Mark a grid about 20×20 yards.
  • Pair up the players, each player with their own ball.
  • Decide who leads first in each pair.

How It Works

  1. The lead dribbler moves freely around the grid - turning, cutting, changing pace.
  2. The following dribbler shadows close behind, copying every move while keeping their own ball under control.
  3. Followers never try to win the leader's ball; the pressure comes purely from proximity.
  4. Swap leader and follower after one minute, and keep rotating.

Coaching Points

  • Head lifted and eyes up, even while performing moves.
  • Close control - the ball stays within a stride.
  • Use all parts of both feet: inside, outside, laces, and sole.
  • Change direction and pace often; leaders should try to lose their shadow.
  • Find open space, accelerate into it, and above all be creative.

Variations

  • Let leaders score a point each time they escape their shadow by two yards.
  • Call out compulsory moves (stepover, Cruyff turn) that leaders must weave in.
  • Make it follower-versus-follower: which pair stays tightest together?
