Lane Spacing and Separation Game
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Young teams swarm the ball - this game makes spreading out the rule instead of the reminder. The Lane Spacing and Separation Game splits a small field into three lanes and locks each player into one, so U7–U10 players feel what good positioning and team shape actually look like while they play.

Setup
- Mark a field approximately 40×30 yards with cones around the perimeter.
- Divide it into three equal lanes with two vertical rows of cones, roughly 10 yards apart.
- Set a small goal (pug goal or flags) on each goal line.
- Split into teams of four in a diamond shape: one defender and one attacker in the middle lane, one midfielder in the left lane, one in the right lane. Match positions evenly between teams.
How It Works
- Play 4v4 toward the small goals.
- Every player is restricted to their own lane for the whole game.
- Within their lane, players can dribble, pass, receive, attack, and defend freely.
- Score in the opponent's small goal as usual.
- Rotate players through different lanes and positions every few minutes.
Coaching Points
- Point out how the lanes keep the field wide - this is what 'spread out' means.
- Encourage passes that switch lanes to find the open teammate.
- Use the shape to introduce roles: defenders behind the ball, wide players stretching play.
- The same setup can teach zonal defending or building from the back - pick one focus per session.
Variations
- Start 3v3 with one player per lane to simplify things for younger groups.
- Limit touches to encourage faster passing between lanes.
- Allow one designated player per team to switch lanes freely as a first step toward open play.
