5v2 Rotating Defenders
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
5v2 Rotating Defenders is a soccer possession drill for U9–U16 built on a classic rondo shape with one twist: the defenders arrive in fresh pairs, ball first. Attackers must solve constant pressure with clean passing, smart movement into space, and loud communication. The rotation keeps intensity high and rest built in.
This drill pairs well with others in the possession category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Mark a grid about 15×15 yards.
- Put five attackers inside the grid in alternate jerseys.
- Pair up the remaining players as defenders and line the pairs up behind one corner cone with a supply of balls.
How It Works
- The first defender pair passes a ball into the five attackers, then immediately sprints in to defend - 5v2 inside the grid.
- Attackers try to string together a set number of passes; if they hit the target, the defending pair does push-ups.
- Play continues until the defenders win the ball or it leaves the grid.
- When the ball is dead, the next defender pair serves a new ball into the same five attackers and play restarts.
Coaching Points
- Pass firmly to feet, then take the first touch away from pressure and toward space.
- Change the direction and tempo of the passing - predictable rondos get eaten alive.
- Choose the right pass: short to feet when tight, longer across the grid when the split opens.
- Make the easy play; speed of decision beats fancy technique here.
- Heads up before receiving so you already know your out-ball.
Variations
- Resize the grid: bigger favors the attackers, smaller favors the defenders.
- Reward splits - a pass between both defenders costs them 10 push-ups.
- Drop to 4v2 for stronger groups.
