The Passing Name Game

Quick players aren't always the fastest - they're the ones who decide before the ball arrives. The Passing Name Game is a simple soccer passing drill that forces U7–U12 players to pick their next pass early and say it out loud. One circle, one ball, and suddenly everyone is thinking a step ahead.
This drill pairs well with others in the passing category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U10 drills.
Setup
- Arrange the whole team in a circle.
- Start with one ball.
How It Works
- The player with the ball passes to anyone in the circle.
- Before the receiver's first touch, they must shout the name of the player they will pass to next.
- Each player takes exactly two touches: one to receive, one to pass.
- The pattern continues - every receiver names their target before the ball reaches them.
- No passing straight back to the player you received from, and spread passes around so everyone stays involved.
Coaching Points
- Scan and decide early - the name should be chosen before the ball arrives.
- A good first touch across the body sets up the second-touch pass.
- Demand quality passes to feet, firm enough to keep the game moving.
- Listen for hesitation: a late shout means a late decision.
Variations
- Move the game into a grid where players roam freely - same rule, harder scanning.
- Add a second ball so two decisions happen at once.
