Improving Speed of Play: Passing Drill
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
This soccer passing drill for U8–U14 players attacks slow play at its source. Because the defender only has to tag the player in possession - not win the ball - anyone who holds the ball too long gets caught. Passing decisions, support runs, and thinking ahead all get faster within minutes.

Setup
- Mark a grid about 15×15 yards for each group of 4; adjust the size to age and ability.
- Set up 3 attackers against 1 defender per grid.
- The defender carries a spare bib in one hand.
- Keep a second ball at the edge of the grid so play restarts instantly.
How It Works
- The 3 attackers keep possession from the defender and may move anywhere in the grid.
- Attackers must keep moving to give the player on the ball support options.
- The defender tries to tag the attacker while that attacker has the ball - not to win the ball itself.
- If the defender tags the player in possession, they hand over the bib and swap roles.
- If the attackers keep the ball for a slow count of 30, they earn a point.
Coaching Points
- Movement and support angles: the two players off the ball should always give safe options.
- Think ahead of the ball - know your next pass before you receive.
- Pass with good pace so the ball moves faster than the defender.
- Introduce combination play (give-and-go, third-man runs) as the group improves.
Variations
- Limit attackers to two touches, then one touch.
- Play the standard version: the defender wins the ball to swap roles instead of tagging.
