Dribbling with Speed: Recognizing When to Dribble
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Some players dribble at every chance; others never do. This soccer dribbling drill for U10–U16 players teaches the trigger: after your team earns the right through possession, one player breaks out and carries the ball at speed across open ground into the far grid. It builds both the run and the recognition of when to make it.
This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Mark two 20×20 yard grids about 12 yards apart.
- Put 5 attackers and 2 defenders in the first grid.
- Put 4 attackers and 2 defenders in the second grid.
- Play starts in the 5v2 grid.
How It Works
- Tell the attackers how many passes they must complete before anyone can break out - set the number by age and skill.
- Once the target is reached, the player on the ball may dribble at speed across the open space into the other grid.
- On arrival, the dribbler must make a good first pass to keep possession alive against the defenders there.
- The supporting attackers spread out to open the grid and give the arriving player options.
- Play now continues 5v2 in the new grid, and the pattern repeats back and forth.
Coaching Points
- Carry the ball at real speed across the gap - big touches into space, then re-control.
- Pick the right moment to break out: a clear lane, not a hopeful gamble.
- The first decision on entering the new grid matters most - a sharp pass keeps the move alive.
Variations
- Restrict the number of touches allowed inside the grids.
- Allow one defender to chase the dribbler across into the opposite grid.
