Fun Dribbling Warm-Up
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
This fun soccer dribbling warm-up turns teammates into obstacles. Working in pairs inside a 20×20 grid, U8-U12 players dribble around scoring points - nutmegging standing partners, flicking the ball over lying ones, and slipping passes under human bridges. It's a brilliant ice-breaker for the first week of a season or camp, though a touch advanced for absolute beginners.

Setup
- Mark a grid roughly 20×20 yards.
- Pair the players up, one ball per pair.
- One partner works with the ball while the other becomes the obstacle; swap roles each round.
How It Works
- Round 1 - Nutmegs: resting players stand with legs wide apart. On your call, dribblers move around the grid playing their ball through any player's legs, running around them, and collecting it on the far side. Each successful nutmeg scores a point.
- Round 2 - Flick-overs: resting players lie on their side. Dribblers approach from behind only, stop the ball, flick it over the lying player, and jump over their legs to keep going. Count successful flicks.
- Round 3 - Bridges: resting players make a bridge - legs crossed, leaning forward with hands and feet on the ground. Dribblers pass the ball under the bridge (between hands and feet) and hop over the feet to follow it.
- After each round, partners swap roles and compare scores.
Coaching Points
- Keep everyone moving - no waiting in queues, the whole grid is live.
- Heads up between touches; players must scan for open obstacles and avoid collisions.
- Keep the ball close so the trick can be played the moment a chance appears.
- Use all surfaces of the foot - inside, outside, sole - to set up each skill.
- Enforce the approach-from-behind rule on flick-overs to keep it safe.
Variations
- Set a time limit per round and crown a grid champion across all three games.
- For older groups, require weak-foot nutmegs or two-touch maximum between obstacles.
