3v3 in the 18 is a soccer attacking drill played entirely inside the penalty area, so every moment happens in shooting range. U11-U16 teams must link with their outside players before going to goal, which forces quick combinations, constant rotation, and a shoot-first mentality on any half chance.

This drill pairs well with others in the attacking category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U14 drills.

Setup

  • Split the group into two teams in different bibs.
  • Put three players from each team inside the 18-yard box, with a goalkeeper in goal.
  • Spread the remaining players around the outside of the box, alternating team colors.

How It Works

  1. Play 3v3 inside the box. Any half chance should be hit - everyone is in scoring range.
  2. Before a team can shoot, they must first play the ball through one of their outside players.
  3. Whoever passes to an outside player swaps roles with them: the outside player dribbles or plays in and joins the 3v3, the passer takes their spot outside.
  4. After the outside link-up, that team is live to attack the goal.
  5. If the defending team wins the ball, they must also play through one of their outside players before shooting.
  6. Keep it dynamic - roles should be changing constantly and shots flying in.

Coaching Points

  • Shoot on half chances - hesitation in the box is the habit this drill kills.
  • Use quick 1-2s with teammates to create the half-yard needed to get the shot away.
  • Outside players must stay alert and move along the line to offer passing angles.
  • Keepers get constant realistic work - coach their reactions and positioning too.

Variations

  • Limit inside players to two touches to speed up the combinations.
  • Award double points for first-time finishes.
  • Play 4v4 inside with older squads and a bigger outside group.
