5v5 Dribbling Game
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The 5v5 Dribbling Game is a soccer dribbling drill for U9–U16 players that builds 1v1 confidence inside a real game. With ten field players on the pitch, the ball carrier constantly has to weigh up three options - dribble, pass, or shoot - and the single rule of the game pushes them to take defenders on.
This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Mark a field about 30×40 yards.
- Split into two teams of 5 field players, plus a goalkeeper for each team.
- Set a goal on each end line - or use two small pop-up goals per end if you have no full goals.
How It Works
- Teams play a normal 5v5 game with one restriction: the player on the ball must beat a defender before they are allowed to pass or shoot.
- Play continues under normal soccer rules otherwise.
- Restart quickly after goals and balls out of play to keep the tempo high.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to attack defenders rather than play safe.
- Look for a positive approach at the defender, then a change of direction and change of pace to get past.
- Once the restriction is met, players still have to pick well: dribble on, pass, or shoot.
Variations
- Remove the restriction and finish with a free-playing 5v5 game.
- Award a bonus point every time a player beats a defender cleanly.
- Use small pop-up goals with no keepers so dribblers finish with precision instead of power.
