This 2v2+4 soccer possession drill builds composure in tight spaces. Two pairs battle inside a 20×20 grid while each team's corner outlet players offer escape routes on the diagonal. U11-U16 players learn to combine under pressure, rotate roles on the move, and pick the pass that keeps possession alive.

This drill pairs well with others in the possession category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U14 drills.

Setup

  • Mark a 20×20 yard grid - adjust the size to your team's age and level.
  • Use 8 players per grid, split into two teams of 4.
  • From each team, 2 players stand outside the grid on diagonally opposite corners as outlet targets.
  • The remaining 2 players from each team play 2v2 inside.

How It Works

  1. Play 2v2 inside the grid; each pair tries to work the ball to one of their corner outlet players.
  2. When a pass reaches an outlet, the roles swap: the outlet player brings the ball in (dribble or pass) and joins the 2v2, while the passer takes their corner spot.
  3. The new pair now attacks toward the opposite corner, trying to combine with the outlet there.
  4. If a corner is shut off, play to the more open diagonal target to keep possession.
  5. When the defenders win the ball, they instantly become the possession team and play to their own corners.

Coaching Points

  • Play at speed and keep moving - static players kill the drill.
  • Support at angles in undefended space so the pass into you can't be intercepted.
  • Scan constantly: the best option is usually wherever the pressure isn't.
  • Pass to keep possession first; the corner pass will open up if you're patient.

Variations

  • Expand the grid and play 3v3 in the middle.
  • Limit inside players to two touches.
  • Score a point for each corner-to-corner sequence (outlet to outlet without losing the ball).
