2v2 Quick Attacking Game - drill diagram25×40 yds
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot

This 2v2 soccer attacking drill is fast, loud, and full of goals. The field is deliberately long for a 2v2, so U8-U14 players get constant breakaways and must attack space at speed. The winners stay on, a fresh pair flies straight at them after every goal, and the transitions never stop.

Setup

  • Mark a grid about 25×40 yards - intentionally big for 2v2, to create breakaways.
  • Place a mini goal or Pugg goal on each end line.
  • Split into two teams with different bibs and pair players up; partners stay together all game.
  • Assign each team a goal to defend. One pair from each team starts on; everyone else lines up along their own end line with a big supply of balls.

How It Works

  1. Play 2v2 to the mini goals.
  2. When a pair concedes, they step off immediately and a new pair from their team attacks straight away with a fresh ball.
  3. The scoring pair must transition instantly from celebration to defending the counter.
  4. Winners stay on until they concede. Balls out of bounds restart from a teammate on the end line.
  5. First team to 20 goals wins.

Coaching Points

  • Transition the moment the ball changes state - after scoring, sprint back into shape.
  • Attack fast and try to catch the defense unbalanced before it sets.
  • Choose well: beat a defender on the dribble when you have space, pass around them when you don't.
  • Demand speed. This game should feel breathless, with goals flying in.

Variations

  • Scale up to 3v3 or 4v4 and adjust the grid size to match your numbers.
  • Add a rule that both partners must touch the ball before a goal counts.
  • Play timed 90-second shifts instead of stay-on-until-scored-on.
