1v1, 1v2, 2v2 Four-Goal Game
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Giving an attacker two goals to aim at changes everything: the defender can't guess, and the dribbler has to commit them before choosing. This 1v1 soccer drill for U8–U14 players builds the courage to take opponents on, with easy switches into 2v1, 2v2, and 1v2 as your players grow into it.

Setup
- Mark a 35×20 yard grid.
- Set two small goals (cones, flags, or pug goals) along each long side of the grid - four goals in total.
- Split the squad into two equal teams in different colored bibs, lined up on opposite long sides.
- All the balls start with one team.
How It Works
- Two players from the ball-side team (1a and 1b) pass across to two opponents (2a and 2b) to start the round.
- 2a and 2b receive and attack either of the two goals on the far side; 1a and 1b step in to defend.
- Keep the matchups fixed: 1a always defends 2a, and 1b always defends 2b, so each duel stays a true 1v1.
- If a defender wins the ball, they immediately attack the two goals opposite their own starting side.
- After 5–7 minutes, switch which team starts with the balls.
Coaching Points
- Encourage attackers to run at their defender with confidence - hesitation lets the defense set.
- The choice of goal should come late, after the defender has committed one way.
- Defensive pressure must be quick but controlled; sprinting in wildly gets beaten by one touch.
- Praise positive first touches that take the attacker toward goal.
Variations
- 2v1: split the balls between the teams; 1a passes to 2a and 2b, then defends them alone. After the series, reverse roles with 2a serving.
- 2v2: 1b passes to 2a and 2b, then both 1a and 1b step out to defend as a pair.
- 1v2: 1a passes to 2a alone, and both 1a and 1b defend - the attacker must solve a two-defender problem.
