1 on 1 Soccer Progression
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
This 1 on 1 soccer dribbling progression for U8 to U12 players builds the courage and skill to take a defender on. It starts with a restricted defender who cannot move until the attacker's first touch, so players can practice body feints and the explosive first steps that follow, then progresses to fully live duels with goals. Layering the difficulty like this means every player, bold or timid, gets genuine 1v1 success early.

Setup
- Mark a grid about 15×25 yards; the two endlines act as the goals to start.
- Place the attacker on one endline with the ball.
- Stand the defender directly in front of the attacker and the ball.
- Set up one grid per pair, or rotate pairs through a shared grid.
How It Works
- The defender may not move until the attacker takes their first touch.
- The attacker uses body feints to unbalance the defender, then pushes the ball past on either side with a burst of speed.
- The defender, once released, tries to stop the attacker from reaching the far endline.
- The attacker earns a point every time they dribble over the endline under control.
- Swap roles after every attempt so both players attack and defend equally.
Coaching Points
- Feints must move the defender's weight; a lazy wiggle fools nobody.
- The escape touch should be positive and immediately followed by maximum acceleration.
- Attack the space behind the defender the moment it opens; hesitation lets them recover.
- Keep score out loud; competition sharpens the intensity of every rep.
Variations
- Remove the defender's restriction and play fully live 1v1 to the endlines in the same grid.
- Add a small pop-up goal at each end, or build goals from cones, flags, or sticks, and play 1v1 to goal.
- Set a time limit per attack so attackers learn to commit to their move quickly.
