Center Mid Passing Combination 1 is a soccer passing drill for U10 to U16 teams that puts a central pivot at the heart of a four-corner passing pattern. Corner players feed the midfielder, sprint down the sideline, and rotate lines, while the pivot links everything with one-touch balls across the grid. It teaches the diagonal passing and constant movement that good central midfield play depends on.

Setup

  • Mark a grid around 20×20 yards; resize it for your group's age and skill.
  • Place one midfielder inside the grid as the central pivot.
  • Split everyone else into four even lines, one on each corner of the grid.
  • The first player in one corner line starts with the ball.

How It Works

  1. Player 1 passes into the central player, then sprints down the sideline to join the back of the next line.
  2. The central player plays a first-time ball out to Player 2 on another corner.
  3. Player 2 passes across to Player 3 and sprints down their sideline to the back of that line.
  4. Player 3 feeds the central player again and follows with a sideline run to the next line.
  5. The central player plays first time to Player 4, who passes to Player 1's corner and runs to the end of that line.
  6. The pattern loops continuously; rotate a new player into the middle every couple of minutes.

Coaching Points

  • Grade every pass on weight, accuracy, and timing; the pattern collapses if any one slips.
  • Runs must start the instant the pass is released, not after admiring it.
  • Loud, early communication keeps the rotation flowing without collisions.
  • Look for rhythm: when the group finds the beat, push the tempo up a notch.

Variations

  • After passing into the middle, Players 1 and 3 step in and take over as the central player.
  • Add a second ball starting from the opposite corner for advanced groups.
  • Restrict corner players to two touches, then one, as quality improves.
