The Tunnel of Death is a 1v1 soccer drill with a name kids remember and a rhythm coaches love: attack, transition, attack again, no standing around. Attackers learn to run at an unbalanced defender with speed; defenders learn to delay, steer, and pounce. It suits U8–U14 and works for either focus.

Setup

  • Build a long, thin channel from three connected grids sharing common cones.
  • Make the middle grid about 15×15 yards and each end grid about 10×15 yards.
  • Split the team into two groups, one at each end of the tunnel.
  • Pick one player to start as the defender in the middle grid, and keep spare balls at both ends.

How It Works

  1. The defender may only defend inside the middle grid.
  2. The first attacker dribbles in and tries to beat the defender through the middle grid to the far end.
  3. If the attacker gets through, they pass to the next attacker in line at that end, and the defender stays in for the next duel.
  4. If the defender wins the ball, the attacker instantly becomes the defender - and the next attacker comes at them right away.
  5. Use one ball, keep the game continuous, and switch out anyone stuck defending too long.

Coaching Points

  • Attackers: dribble with speed, go straight at the defender, and use an explosive first step past them.
  • Once past, get in behind quickly - don't drift sideways.
  • Defenders: close fast, then slow down as you arrive; never fly in.
  • Force the attacker toward the channel's edge, stay low, and be patient for the winning moment.

Variations

  • Play 2v2 through the middle grid instead of 1v1.
  • Score the game: attackers earn a point per successful run, defenders a point per steal.
