Tell young players they're pirates raiding for treasure and suddenly every dribbling rep matters. The Pirate Treasure Dribbling Game is a fun soccer dribbling drill for U5–U8 players: dodge the guards, knock down a cone with the ball, and carry the loot home - all while keeping the ball at their feet.

This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U7 drills.

Setup

  • Mark a 30×30 yard grid.
  • Stand about 10 tall cones (the treasure) along one side of the grid.
  • Line all players (the pirates) up on the opposite side, each with a ball.
  • Put 2–3 players in alternate-color bibs inside the grid - they guard the treasure.

How It Works

  1. On your command, the pirates dribble across the grid, trying to get past the guards.
  2. To claim treasure, a pirate must knock a cone over with the ball.
  3. After knocking a cone down, the pirate picks it up and dribbles back to their start line carrying it.
  4. If a guard wins a pirate's ball, that pirate returns to the start line and begins again.
  5. Play until the treasure is gone, then count the loot and swap the guards.

Coaching Points

  • Ball close and under control - pirates who kick and chase lose their ship.
  • Heads up while dribbling so players can spot the guards and the open cones.
  • Encourage an explosive burst of speed past a defender.
  • Celebrate brave attempts, not just successful raids.

Variations

  • Grow or shrink the grid, or change the number of guards, to match age, skill, and group size.
  • Add a 'safe island' zone where pirates can pause with the ball for three seconds.
  • Race two pirate crews on separate grids for team competition.
