The Jam-Packed Soccer Dribbling Drill teaches young players to keep control of the ball when the field gets crowded. Everyone dribbles around a circle and reacts to shouted commands, with the 'CROSS' call sending the whole group through the middle at once. It is an ideal dribbling warm-up for U6-U12 players learning to lift their heads in traffic.

Setup

  • Build a circle of disc cones roughly 20 yards in circumference.
  • Give every player a ball.
  • Line the players up around the outside of the circle.

How It Works

  1. Players start dribbling around the outside of the circle, all in the same direction.
  2. Explain the command words, then call them out during the drill.
  3. JOG: dribble at a comfortable, controlled pace.
  4. FULL SPEED: dribble as fast as possible while keeping control.
  5. CUT: chop the ball and dribble the opposite way around the circle.
  6. CROSS: everyone cuts straight across the middle of the circle, avoiding the other players and their balls.

Coaching Points

  • Heads up, especially on CROSS - every player enters the middle at the same time.
  • Keep the ball on a short leash whenever traffic gets thick.
  • Arms out for balance and gentle shielding.
  • Use both feet and every surface of the foot.
  • Keep it playful - this drill should be loud, busy, and fun.

Variations

  • Invent extra commands, such as a stop, a turn, or a specific move.
  • Reverse the meaning of commands (JOG means sprint) to test listening skills.
  • Shrink the circle to force tighter control.
