Dribbling to Beat Defenders

Dribbling to Beat Defenders - drill diagram45×30 yds
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot

This soccer dribbling drill teaches U10-U16 players when to keep the ball and when to take someone on. Attackers pass and protect possession in their zone, then pick the right moment to dribble through a defended middle zone into the far grid. Dribbling across - not passing - is the only way through, so players must learn to commit and beat defenders.

Setup

  • Mark a 45×30 yard grid and split it into three equal zones.
  • Make three teams of 4 in different colors.
  • Start with 4 attackers in the first zone, 4 defenders in the middle zone, and 4 attackers in the third zone.
  • The coach stands outside with the ball supply.

How It Works

  1. The coach plays a ball into the first attacking zone. Those 4 attackers pass and support while 2 of the 4 defenders push in to press them.
  2. When an attacker sees an opening, they must DRIBBLE through the middle zone - guarded by the remaining 2 defenders - and into the far attacking zone.
  3. Arriving there creates an overload: one zone always plays 5v2 while the other plays 4v2.
  4. As the attacker crosses, the 2 middle defenders shift into the far zone to press, and the original 2 pressing defenders recover to the middle.
  5. If defenders win the ball, they play it back to the coach, who restarts immediately.

Coaching Points

  • Dribble across with speed and genuinely take defenders on - no tip-toeing through.
  • Keep passing, receiving, and turning sharp enough to hold possession under pressure.
  • Support with proper angles and well-shaped runs so the ball carrier always has options.
  • Pick the moment: dribble when the middle opens, keep the ball when it doesn't.

Variations

  • Require a set number of passes before a team may attempt the dribble across.
  • Limit touches for the possession players.
  • Add extra defenders to raise the pressure on stronger groups.
