Diamond Passing Combination
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The Diamond Passing Combination is a soccer passing drill that flows like a metronome: pass, overlap, first-time layoff, release. U10–U16 players sharpen first touch and pass tempo in a tight diamond - then stretch the cones apart and the same pattern becomes long-passing practice.
This drill pairs well with others in the passing category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Set four cones in the shape of an elongated diamond.
- Place an all-time passer on each of the two cones where the diamond's points sit closest together.
- Split the remaining players into two lines, one at each far point of the diamond, with the balls at one end.
- Rotate the all-time passers every 3–5 minutes.
How It Works
- The first player in line passes into one of the passers and immediately overlaps around them.
- That passer plays a first-time ball across to the other passer.
- The second passer returns the ball first-time into the path of the overlapping player.
- The overlapping player carries or plays the ball into the next player in the opposite line.
- The pattern repeats in the other direction, flowing continuously.
Coaching Points
- Clean, crisp passes - the pattern exposes any heavy or underhit ball.
- Time the overlap with the pass; arriving early or late breaks the sequence.
- Keep the drill flowing without pauses between repetitions.
- Once the pattern is smooth, push the speed of the combinations up.
Variations
- Make every pass one-touch.
- Expand the distances between cones and play the combinations with longer balls in the air.
