Across-Field Warm-Up
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The Across-Field Warm-Up packs volleys, traps, and headers into a moving pre-game routine. Pairs travel the width of the pitch - one tossing, one returning - so players warm up their touch, their legs, and their concentration at the same time. It is a dependable soccer warm-up drill for U9-U16 teams before every match.
This drill pairs well with others in the warm-ups category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.
Setup
- Pair the players up with one ball per pair.
- Player 1 stands on the touchline; player 2 faces them about 5 yards away, holding the ball.
How It Works
- Player 2 jogs backward across the field, tossing the ball to their partner as they go.
- Player 1 jogs forward, returns each toss with the required skill, and keeps pace.
- At the far touchline, the pair swaps roles and works back across.
- Change the skill on each crossing: inside-of-the-foot volleys alternating right and left; instep (laces) volleys alternating feet; thigh trap then return; chest trap then return; headers, including jumping headers.
Coaching Points
- Get the body in line behind the ball before playing it.
- Use a controlled touch or clean contact - accuracy back to the thrower beats power.
- Keep both players jogging so the warm-up actually raises the heart rate.
- On headers, attack the ball with the forehead rather than letting it hit you.
Variations
- Reverse the roles of the runners: the thrower jogs forward while the receiver moves backward.
- Ask for two-touch returns (cushion, then play) to add a receiving element.
- Finish with a competitive crossing - most accurate returns wins.
