The 1v1v1 Triangle Game throws three players into a chaotic triangle where everyone attacks and defends at once. Because goals only count when dribbled through, players must take opponents on rather than poke hopeful passes. It builds dribbling courage, shielding, and scanning for U9-U16 players, and the constant duels double as fitness work.

Setup

  • Arrange three small goals, each about 2 yards wide, in a triangle with 15-20 yards between them.
  • Assign three players, each defending one goal.
  • Each player may score on either of the other two goals.
  • Start with one ball in play.

How It Works

  1. Play a continuous three-way game: every player defends their own goal while attacking the other two.
  2. Goals count only when a player dribbles through a goal - passing the ball through the gate scores nothing.
  3. This rule forces players to take on defenders and break in behind them to finish.
  4. Play timed rounds or to a goal target, then rotate in fresh players.

Coaching Points

  • Attack defenders with speed, aiming for the space behind them.
  • Keep the head up and hunt the most exposed goal - often the one whose owner has pushed forward.
  • Defend with awareness: know your positioning relative to your goal at all times.
  • Recover quickly the instant the ball is lost - transition speed wins this game.

Variations

  • Replace the gate goals with one tall 9-inch cone per player; knock over an opponent's cone to score. This version rewards passing accuracy instead of dribbling penetration.
