1v1 to Goal
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
1v1 to Goal is a soccer finishing drill for U8–U14 that isolates the moment every striker faces: one defender between you and the keeper. The defender is boxed into a narrow grid, so attackers get repeated, realistic chances to beat the last man and finish. Simple setup, huge repetition count.

Setup
- Mark a 12×5 yard grid just inside the penalty area with cones.
- Assign one defender to the grid - they may only defend inside it.
- Put a goalkeeper in the goal.
- Place a starting cone 7–8 yards outside the grid; the remaining players queue there, each with a ball.
How It Works
- The attacker dribbles at the grid and tries to get through it and out the far end, between the exit cones - not out the sides.
- The defender works only inside the grid to stop them.
- Once through, the attacker finishes with a shot on goal against the keeper.
- Rotate the defender every 1–2 minutes to keep them fresh.
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball glued to your feet through the grid - space is deliberately tight.
- Beat the defender with a burst of speed, not just a trick.
- Exit the grid cleanly, then finish with a composed, accurate shot.
- Attackers should commit the defender before changing direction.
Variations
- Any attacker who gets stopped instantly becomes a second defender against the next player in line.
- Widen or narrow the grid to tune the difficulty.
- Build two grids side by side and let the attacker choose left or right lane on the move.
