This 1v1 soccer dribbling drill introduces U7 to U10 players to the art of beating a defender, without the fear of actually losing the ball. A passive partner stands in as the defender while the attacker practices the full sequence: a controlled approach, a convincing fake, a change of direction, and a burst of speed away. Because nobody is trying to steal the ball yet, beginners can rehearse the movement until it feels automatic.

This drill pairs well with others in the dribbling category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U9 drills.

Setup

  • Pair up the whole team, partners facing each other 7 to 10 yards apart.
  • Give one ball to each pair; the player acting as the defender starts with it.
  • Spread the pairs out so each has a clear lane to work in.

How It Works

  1. The defender starts each rep by passing the ball to the attacker's feet.
  2. After passing, the defender takes one step forward but stays passive; no tackling at this stage.
  3. The attacker controls the ball and dribbles straight at the defender.
  4. Approaching the defender, the attacker sells a fake, cuts the ball in a new direction, and accelerates past.
  5. Swap roles after each rep so both players get equal attacking work.

Coaching Points

  • The first touch should set up a confident, controlled approach with the right amount of speed.
  • Attackers must dribble directly at the defender; drifting wide makes the fake meaningless.
  • Offer a menu of fakes: stepovers, hard stab steps, stutter steps, a toe drag, a shoulder dip, a fake kick, or even misleading eyes.
  • The cut after the fake needs to genuinely change the ball's direction, not just the body's.
  • The burst of pace is what actually beats the defender; demand acceleration the moment the fake lands.

Variations

  • Let the defender apply light pressure by stepping across as the attacker changes direction.
  • Name a specific move each round so everyone builds the same fake before free choice returns.
  • Progress to a live 1v1 to a line or small gate once the pattern looks sharp.
