Split the Defenders is a soccer passing drill for U11–U14 that puts a price on the game's most valuable pass: the one that goes between two defenders. Four attackers circulate the ball around the grid hunting for the split, while the defending pair works to close the lane. It sharpens pass selection, disguise, and communication.

Setup

  • Mark a grid about 18×18 yards.
  • Form three teams of two players.
  • Two teams combine on the outside of the grid (four attackers); the third pair defends inside.
  • Build extra grids to keep the whole squad playing.

How It Works

  1. The four outside players keep possession around the grid, away from the two defenders inside.
  2. A point is scored when a pass travels between the two defenders - a split - and reaches a teammate on the far side.
  3. If an attacker makes the error that loses the ball, that player and their partner swap in as defenders, and the pair that won it joins the outside.
  4. Every time the defending pair gets split, they owe one extra ball-win before they can switch out - split them twice and they must win it three times.

Coaching Points

  • Move constantly to open the splitting lane for your partner - the pass is created off the ball.
  • Hit passes with real pace and on target; a soft split gets cut out.
  • Disguise the split: look one way, play the other.
  • Talk and signal - hands, eyes, and voice all count as communication.

Variations

  • Limit touches per possession to speed the game up.
  • Expand the grid 3–5 yards on every side and play with the attackers inside the grid instead of around it.
  • Award double points for a first-time split.
