Reaction, Acceleration, and Winning the Ball
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Reaction, Acceleration, and Winning the Ball is a soccer fitness drill that turns 50-50 duels into a game. In groups of three, U8-U16 players shadow a dribbler until the coach's call sends the ball into space - then all three explode after it. It's a perfect warm-up when your session theme is fitness, sharpness, or winning loose balls.
This drill pairs well with others in the fitness category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U12 drills.
Setup
- Mark out a generous grid - around 35×45 yards works for most squads.
- Split players into groups of three with one ball per group.
- In each trio, one player starts on the ball; the other two jog alongside as shadows.
How It Works
- The player on the ball dribbles freely around the grid while their two group-mates shadow them closely.
- On your command, the dribbler pushes the ball 10-15 yards into open space.
- All three players race to win the ball first, cleanly and decisively.
- Whoever comes away with it becomes the new dribbler, and the group resets for the next call.
- Keep score if you like - first player to five wins takes the round.
Coaching Points
- Stay on your toes while shadowing - the call can come at any moment.
- React to the pass instantly; the first step decides most 50-50s.
- Fight for clean, sole possession - a toe-poke that squirts loose doesn't count.
- Dribblers should keep their head up and vary direction so shadows can't switch off.
Variations
- Have the ball carrier juggle instead of dribble and volley the ball away on your command.
- Call a color or number instead of a generic command so players must process information before reacting.
- Shrink the grid to force more collisions of interest around the ball and quicker duels.
