Power/Finesse with a Twist
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Power/Finesse with a Twist is a soccer shooting drill for U10–U16 players that pairs two very different finishes back to back: a driven strike from the edge of the box, then a volley or header from close range. The challenge format adds a knockout edge that keeps every player invested even while waiting in line.

Setup
- Put a goalkeeper in the goal.
- Set a cone about 25 yards from goal and line the rest of the players up behind it.
- The coach stands to the side with a supply of balls.
How It Works
- The coach plays a ground pass to the first player in line, timed so the shot happens around the edge of the penalty box - the player strikes it first time.
- The coach immediately follows with a tossed ball that the player must finish with a volley or a header.
- If the player scores both, they name another player as their challenger.
- The challenger must also score both finishes or they are out. If the challenger makes both, the original shooter is out instead.
- Continue until one player remains.
Coaching Points
- Good striking posture: plant foot beside the ball, head steady, chest over the ball.
- Composure on flighted balls - get set early and stay balanced.
- On the driven first shot, players should follow through and land on their kicking foot.
Variations
- With younger groups, skip the choosing - the challenge automatically passes to the next player in line.
- Require the second finish to be a header only.
- Have the goalkeeper start each round by throwing the ball out to the coach.
