Goalkeeper Side-to-Side
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
Saves rarely come from a standing start - keepers are usually moving, or getting up off the ground. This goalkeeper side-to-side drill combines post-to-post shuffles with rapid get-ups and catches, training U9–U16 keepers to recover from a dive and be set for the next shot in seconds.

Setup
- The keeper stands in goal on the goal line.
- The coach stands a few yards out with a supply of balls.
- The keeper begins shuffling side to side, post to post, along the line.
How It Works
- While the keeper shuffles, call the command.
- On the call, the keeper drops to the ground into a push-up position, then springs straight back up to a set position.
- The moment they're set, toss a ball for the keeper to catch cleanly.
- The keeper returns the ball, resumes shuffling, and the cycle repeats.
- Work for about one minute, then rest. Run 2–3 sets.
Coaching Points
- Quick lateral shuffles with the feet never crossing.
- Up off the ground fast: feet set, hands ready, before the toss arrives.
- Stay on the toes with a slight forward lean when set - flat heels react slowly.
- Insist on secure catches even when the legs are burning.
Variations
- Strike the serve with your feet instead of tossing, so the keeper faces real shots after each get-up.
- Vary the drop: push-up position, sit, or lying flat, to change the recovery challenge.
