Combination Play: Improving 1-2 Combinations
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
This soccer passing drill drills the classic 1-2 combination into your team's habits, and it works well for U10 to U16 squads. Players rotate through a simple corner pattern that mixes a long service, a wall pass, and a spin around the cone to receive again on the far side. Because the pattern repeats continuously, players rack up quality one-touch reps while also learning to move the instant their pass leaves their foot.

Setup
- Mark a grid roughly 20×25 yards with a cone on each corner.
- Station one player at three of the corner cones.
- Send the remaining players to the fourth cone to form a short starting line.
- The first player in that line begins with the only ball.
How It Works
- Player A drives a long pass across to Player B at the next corner.
- Player B lays the ball back to Player A with one touch, then spins around their cone.
- Player A returns the ball to Player B on the far side of the cone.
- Player B then plays a long pass on to Player C, and the same pattern continues around the grid.
- After each action, players follow the direction of play to the next station.
Coaching Points
- Demand one-touch passes with honest pace and clean accuracy on every ball.
- Players should know their next action before the ball arrives; thinking ahead keeps the pattern flowing.
- Insist on communication: a call, a pointed hand, or clear eye contact before each pass.
- The spin around the cone should be sharp and immediate, not a lazy jog.
Variations
- Add a second ball and start Players A and C at the same time so everyone must scan constantly.
- Reverse the direction of the pattern so players spin and pass off the other foot.
- Lengthen the grid to force longer driven services between corners.
