Circle Passing Overlap Combination
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The Circle Passing Overlap Combination is a soccer passing drill for U12 to U16 teams that layers overlapping runs onto a two-ball circle pattern. Central players feed the circle, outside players combine and overlap each other, and the final ball is slipped into the overlapper's path before roles rotate. With two balls moving at once, players must scan, talk, and time their runs precisely, which makes this a demanding warm-up for advanced groups.

Setup
- Arrange the outside players in a circle, spaced 5 to 7 yards apart.
- Place two players in the center of the circle.
- Both central players start with a ball.
How It Works
- The two central players begin together, each passing to an outside player on opposite sides of the circle.
- The outside receiver plays one touch to the teammate immediately left or right of them.
- Having passed, that first receiver instantly sprints an overlapping run around the player they passed to.
- The overlapped player returns the ball to the central player, who has held their central position.
- The central player plays the ball into the space ahead of the overlapping runner.
- The overlapper collects it and swaps roles with the central player, and the pattern continues.
- Players choose left or right based on which teammates are free, keeping heads up so two balls never target the same player.
Coaching Points
- The overlap must start the moment the pass is released; a late run breaks the whole sequence.
- Play everything one touch to keep the timing between pass and run intact.
- Passes need proper pace: zippy but receivable.
- Central players stay truly central until the swap so they always face the ball with room to play.
- Start slow while the pattern is learned, then push the speed up steadily.
Variations
- Run a single ball first so the group masters the overlap timing before adding the second.
- Require the ball into the overlapper's path to be the receiver's first touch.
- Finish each overlap with a shot at a portable goal outside the circle for a finishing twist.
