4v4 to Lines or Small Goals is the smallest true version of the full game, which is why coaches at every level lean on it. With only eight players on a 40×25 field, every soccer fundamental shows up constantly: passing, receiving, support, penetration, defending, and stretching the field. The long, narrow shape rewards teams that look to play forward early. It fits any group from U8 to U16.

This drill pairs well with others in the possession category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U12 drills.

Setup

  • Mark a field approximately 40×25 yards, playing lengthwise between the short ends.
  • Choose a scoring method: an end line to attack, or small goals about 8 feet wide (one or two per end).
  • Split the players into two teams of four in different bibs.
  • Because the field is longer than it is wide, the shape itself pushes players to pass forward early.

How It Works

  1. Each team defends its own line or small goals and attacks the other end.
  2. If playing to lines: score by stopping the ball dead anywhere along the opponent's end line.
  3. If playing to goals: score by stopping the ball inside either small goal.
  4. Restart quickly after every score and play normal soccer rules otherwise.

Coaching Points

  • Vision: with so few players, heads should be on a constant pivot, reading the game before receiving.
  • Communication: demand constant talk and clear body language between teammates.
  • Support: use the full width and length to create passing angles that give the receiver time and space.
  • Attacking detail: purposeful first touch, sensible choice of short or long passing, and changes of speed and direction to create chances.
  • Defending: pressure, cover, and balance, with as many players as possible goal-side of the ball.

Variations

  • Scale the field size up or down to match the age and skill of the group.
  • Switch between line scoring and goal scoring mid-session to change the attacking picture.
  • Add a neutral player who always joins the attacking team to teach overloads.
