3v1 Rotating Defenders
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
The 3v1 Rotating Defenders game is a small-space soccer possession drill that suits U9 to U16 teams. Three attackers try to string passes together in a 10×10 grid while a stream of fresh defenders arrives one after another, so the pressure never gets stale. In a few minutes players get intense work on pass quality, support angles, communication, and quick decisions, and the defenders get repeated chances to hunt the ball.

Setup
- Mark a grid roughly 10×10 yards.
- Organize the squad into groups of six per grid.
- Put three attackers inside the grid wearing an alternate jersey.
- Line the other three players up behind one corner cone as defenders, with the ball supply beside them.
How It Works
- The first defender starts each round by passing a ball into the three attackers.
- That defender immediately follows the pass into the grid, creating a 3v1.
- The attackers try to string together as many consecutive passes as they can.
- The round ends when the defender wins the ball or the ball leaves the grid.
- The next defender in line instantly serves a new ball and steps in, and play continues.
- After all three defenders have gone, swap the groups so the attackers defend.
Coaching Points
- Judge every pass on weight, pace, and accuracy; sloppy passes die in this small space.
- Support players should move early and face the passer so the ball can reach them cleanly.
- Constant talk makes the game easy: call for the ball and warn teammates of pressure.
- Push for one and two-touch play with a first touch that moves the ball into space.
- Reward smart, simple decisions made at speed over fancy ones made late.
Variations
- Enlarge the grid to help the attackers, or shrink it to make possession harder and defending easier.
- Count passes out loud and let groups compete for the highest streak.
- Send in two defenders at once to create 3v2 for advanced groups.
