3v1 Early Support is a possession soccer drill that isolates one idea: start supporting before your teammate even receives the ball. Three attackers keep the ball from a single defender, and a turnover flips the game into the neighboring grid. U10-U16 players learn angles, distances, and movement off the ball in a format simple enough to coach in detail.

This drill pairs well with others in the passing category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U13 drills.

Setup

  • Build two 12×12 yard grids that share one side.
  • Use six players: three red and three yellow.
  • Put the three reds plus one yellow in the first grid; the yellow player starts as the defender.
  • The other two yellows wait in the second grid.

How It Works

  1. Play 3v1 in the first grid, with the reds keeping possession from the yellow defender.
  2. The attackers must always give the player on the ball two passing options.
  3. The defender's goal is to win the ball and pass it to a teammate in the other grid.
  4. When that happens, the defender runs over to join their team, and the red who caused the turnover follows to become the new defender.
  5. The game restarts as a 3v1 in the second grid, and continues back and forth.

Coaching Points

  • Early support: move into position before the ball is received, not after.
  • Good angles: support in space the defender cannot screen, so the pass cannot be cut out.
  • Keep moving without the ball, supporting on both sides of the ball carrier - never stacked on one side.
  • First touch into space, toward the next supporting player.
  • Use disguise and deception to unbalance the defender.

Variations

  • Limit the attackers to two touches, then one touch.
  • Award the defender a point for every forced turnover to keep them motivated.
  • Grow the grids to 15×15 for younger players who need more time.
