Triangle Goal Game
Attackers Defenders Neutral Goalkeeper Pass Run Dribble Shot
A goal you can score on from three sides changes how teams attack. The Triangle Goal Game is a small-sided soccer finishing drill for U8–U14 players where quick passing and movement pull the keeper out of position - then a fast switch punishes them. Passing, receiving, defending, and finishing all show up in one game.
This drill pairs well with others in the shooting category, and you can find age-matched sessions under U11 drills.
Setup
- Mark a grid roughly 35×35 yards; adjust the size to your players' age and level.
- Build a triangle goal in the middle using training sticks or flags, about 5 yards per side.
- Put a goalkeeper inside the triangle.
- Split the group into two even teams - 4v4 or 5v5.
How It Works
- Both teams attack the same three-sided goal and defend against the other team.
- A goal counts when the ball passes through any side of the triangle, no higher than the top of the sticks or flags.
- The keeper must defend all three sides, constantly repositioning.
- After a goal, the scoring team gets a point and the ball is live on the other side of the goal - play continues immediately.
- When the keeper saves, they distribute into open space away from both teams, and the chase is on.
Coaching Points
- Fast ball circulation drags the keeper around the triangle - reward teams that switch sides quickly.
- Movement off the ball creates the free shooting lane; standing still lets the keeper set.
- Encourage composed finishing under the height limit rather than blasting.
- Defenders should press the ball while screening the nearest side of the goal.
Variations
- Require a set number of passes before a team may shoot.
- Restrict players to one or two touches to speed up play.
- Rotate keepers every few minutes so several players feel the three-sided challenge.
